In the spirit of Black History Month, BMe Community is seeking 25 Black men committed to building more caring and prosperous communities in Akron, Louisville, Miami, and Pittsburgh.
The BMe Community Genius Fellowship is an initiative backed by major foundations including The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, The William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust and the James Graham Brown Foundation. The 25 finalists will be awarded $10,000 each for their charitable projects and admitted to a lifelong fellowship of their peers.
“In big and small ways, we make Black History every day,” states BMe Community founder and CEO, Trabian Shorters. “So BMe Community shines a spotlight on those unsung Black men who coach, teach, organize, run businesses and make differences in ways that only they can. We want the world to see the genius in their commitment to others.”
Shorters says that BMe Community makes the application process exceptionally easy. Applicants simply go to www.bmecommunity.org/apply and share their story about why they are committed to helping others.
Past Fellows include men like Miami’s Chad Cherry, a BMe Community Genius since 2017, who was inspired to feed communities with healthier gourmet meals while spreading knowledge about healthy living and nutrition after his diagnosis with Type 2 Diabetes. His organization, Refresh Live, uses a combination of education, lifestyle, and food services to enact change in our community.
Since 2013, BMe Community has impacted over 2 million families, won over 67 awards, wrote a New York Times Bestseller, and continues to have a boundless impact on sharing more authentic narratives of Black Men. There are currently 194 BMe Community Genius Fellows throughout the nation who work in the areas of education, health and wellness, human rights, economic development, justice reform, and more.
For Black History Month, BMe Community is encouraging the public to share this information with Black men in greater Akron, Louisville, Miami or Pittsburgh. Applications will be accepted through February 28th. To learn more, visit http://bmecommunity.org/apply.
